Jenoiserie • Ship of Fools
My most recent Chinoiserie project was started with this image. I was always fascinated by Brueghel's ship of fools and the elegant pleasure boats of Watteau and Fragonard–the whole idea of foolish and often brave people embarking to who knows where. I thought it was a good way to start.
My series of chinoiserie images are titled "Jenoiserie", since they have more of my personal stamp than those of a traditional (and lovely) 17th century French images in this style.
This ship of fools image, one of many in this 100 linear yard canvas project, is about 2 feet long. My concept for the whole mural was that the world of humans is very small compared to the world of Nature and Imagination. Tiny humans in a world of oversized animals, insects and flowers.
