"Enchante, Shell", CandP watercolor class#4, 11/17/09
Sunday, November 22, 2009 at 9:27AM This is a photograph of some shells I have picked up on beaches.
This is the beginning of a value study of the shells, done in Daniel Smith Lunar Black on cold press 300 pound Arches Paper. I drew (very lightly) the shapes and painted all of them with a light wash of Lunar Black. Then I began to add layers of values, usually wet on wet.
CandP Watercolor Class, #4, 11/17/09 “ Enchante, Shell.” Instead of "pleased to meetcha, Shell"
1. Review assignments (read pg. 30 to 31 while setting up)
Both classes...read 30- 31 before starting assignment.
Shell Studies.....these are to be used in the next assignment for next class......
1. Lightly sketch three shells on 1/8 piece of paper....each at a 1 different level on the paper, in 2.different sizes, and 3.overlapping somewhere....(all these show distance). With Lunar black, go from back to front, light to dark (er). Be sure to incorporate shadows! (while waiting, prepare next assignment)
2. Be sure you have read pg. 30-31 first! Lightly sketch another shell on 1/8 paper...make it large and filling up the format and paint with a light wash of a stain (alizarin, auroelin, quinacridone, pthalo, etc) Drop in colors while wash is wet to see how they react. Experiment!
Try some modeling later with some lunar black.
3. Try one study of a shell in “natural” colors. Mix your browns (neutrals) from a combination of complements. Start very lightly.....
Assignment.......Bring your shell studies to class next time, and read (and re-read) pg. 24 to 31. Also, bring a 1/4 piece of GOOD water color paper, ready to go...all taped.
